HISTORY OF DARE

DARE was established in 1983 by Daryl F. Gates & the Rotary Club of Los Angeles to educate students and children about the dangers of drug abuse.  Daryl F. Gates was once the Police Chief for the City of Los Angeles California.  Chief Gates story and interaction with law enforcement & the dangers of drugs & alcohol likely influenced and helped shape the start of DARE.

Chief Gates' father was an alcoholic and often wound up in the custody of the police.  Later in life, Gates commented that he endured taunts and harassment from other students because of his fathers behaviour.  Gates wrote later in life that he had a low opinion of the police due to their rough treatment of his father.  At the age of 16, Gates was arrested for assaulting a police office who manhandled his brother during a parking dispute.  Charges were dropped when Gates appologized for his actions.

Today, many people are exposed to environments where drugs & alcohol influence negative behaviour.  Gates and many people that support DARE have seen the effects of drug abuse first and hence fully support & understand the benefits of the DARE program. Law enforcement has also strived to learn from the past to make for a better future and better serve the public.
